Official Release of OpenMandriva Linux 4.0: Discover the Exciting New Features – Softpedia News

The OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 Operating System Is Here: A Major Release with Exciting New Features

The highly-anticipated release of the OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 operating system has finally arrived. After nearly two years of development, the OpenMandriva community has announced the general availability of this major release which is packed with new features, updated components, and several improvements.

A Continuation of the Popular Mandriva Linux Distro

OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 carries on the spirit of the now-deprecated Mandriva and Mandrake Linux operating systems, which were extremely popular among Linux enthusiasts. However, this latest release offers even more exciting features and improvements, making it a must-have for any Linux lover.

Faster, More Stable, and Reliable with LLVM/Clang

One of the biggest highlights of OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 is that it is compiled with LLVM/Clang instead of GCC, which is the GNU Compiler Collection. This allows for the highest levels of optimization, making the operating system extremely fast, stable, and reliable at all times. Plus, LTO (Link Time Optimization) is now enabled in certain packages, making it even faster.

Gear Up for Performance with Linux 5.1 and Mesa 19.1

The latest Linux 5.1 kernel series and Mesa 19.1 graphics stack are shipped with OpenMandriva Lx 4.0, which means better hardware support for all users. Additionally, the operating system offers complete support for AArch64 and ARMv7hnl platforms, as well as a specific variant for AMD processors that takes full advantage of their new features.

“We are also working on a RISC-V port, but it is not yet ready for release,” said OpenMandriva.

What’s New in OpenMandriva Lx 4.0?

Aside from the already mentioned updates and improvements, OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 comes with several new built-in utilities, such as the OpenMandriva Repository Management Tool and OpenMandriva Control Center, as well as a few new apps, including Dnfdragora DNF GUI for package management, Kuser for managing users and groups, and KBackup for system backups.

There are also updates to major components, such as the KDE Plasma 5.15.5 desktop environment, with KDE Applications 19.04.2 and KDE Frameworks 5.58.0 built against Qt 5.12.3 LTS. Other notable updates include X.Org Server 1.20.4, LLVM/clang 8.0.1, Calamares 3.2.7, systemd 242, Java 12, LibreOffice 6.2, Mozilla Firefox 66.0.5, Krita 4.2.1, and digiKam 6.0.
